Prescottia is a New World genus of terrestrial orchids native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Central and South America, the West Indies with a single North American species growing in South Florida. Plants in this genus have thick fleshy roots and a basal rosette of leaves which are often withering or absent by bloom time. The relatively tall inflorescence is partially covered by sheathing bracts with numerous sessile, non-resupinate flowers. The flowers are surrounded by numerous textured sheaths, and are often small, green and fragrant. Morphologically they are characterized by the sepals which are unified at the base to form a cup-like structure with the deeply concave lip.
