Galeandra is a neotropical genus with its center of diversity in the Amazon region and occurs in North America, Mexico, the West Indies, Central and South America. It includes epiphytic and terrestrial orchids that are easily recognizable by the funnel-shaped labellum on the resupinate flower. The inflorescence is a terminal raceme and the plicate leaves may not be present at the time of flowering. The stems may be reed like, or more often pseudobulbs.
